Uncompahgre Peak
Distance: 7.6-15 miles RT (depending on trailhead)
Elevation Gain: 3000′-5000′
Starting Elevation: 11,000′
Rating: Difficult
Uncompahgre is one of the 54 fourteeners in the state and is quite noticeable from a distance due to the unique shape of it’s peak.
It is not a difficult climb but it is quite long and is often combined with Wetterhorn to bag 2 peaks in 1 trip. The shortest route is 7.6 miles RT and requires a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the trailhead.
If your goal is to bag at least one fourteener, this is a good choice. The trail is well marked and mostly above tree line so make sure you’re down off the peak before the traditional afternoon storms arrive.
If you are visiting from a lower elevation you should acclimate before hitting this trail as it starts at about 11,400 feet above sea level. If you have the itch to hike fourteeners in Colorado or just want more info on this hike, Gerry Roach’s book Colorado’s Fourteeners is a must
The closest town to overnight in is Lake City. Lake City is also a great place to rent a jeep to get you to the trail head if you don’t have 4 wheel drive. The Sportsman Outdoors & Fly Shop offers guided hiking tours as well as shuttle services to the trailhead (we used this service when we took this hike and it worked out perfectly). After your hike when you’re too tired to cook, head to A&A Pasta Factory for authentic Italian.
