Spud Lake

Spud Lake offers a big bang for your hiking buck. It is easily accessible from Hwy 550 north of Durango and is short with a small amount of elevation gain.

Upon arrival at the crystalline alpine lake, you are rewarded with views of Spud Mountain to the north and the towering Twilight Peaks above you to the east.

Scope out a great picnic spot and soak in the beauty around you. The water feels great on a hot July afternoon so try to arrive early before the crowds especially on weekend days.

Ginger (our hiking buddy) rates this hike as one of her favorites because swimming after sticks in Spud Lake is more fun than almost anything.

Since relaxing by the lake can work up a big appetite, head back to Durango for some great food and drink and if you have the family with you I would recommend Steamworks, Old Tymers or The Palace all great family establishments.
