Osprey Talon 22 Pack
By Karenna Awtry
Used to be that a backpack was for carrying books, a day pack rode around your waist on walks and a hiking backpack hung in the garage awaiting its next trip to the mountains. Fortunately, times change. Your active lifestyle isn’t limited to weekend excursions and your backpack needn’t be, either.
When you want a small, versatile pack that can run with you, bike with you and keep you hydrated and geared-up when you are on the trail, grab the Talon 22 backpack by Osprey. This unisex day pack is the perfect blend of weight-saving storage and back-saving support. The back panel has the moisture-wicking mesh you’ve come to expect from a quality pack; the mesh is also incorporated into the foam-padded hip and shoulder straps, for added comfort.
A well-designed hipbelt, easy torso adjustment, compression straps, well-organized and plentiful storage, and hydration-bladder compatibility round out the quality features of this multi-use pack.
Users who’ve talked up their Talon 22 backpacks online attest to its versatility. There are those who use it daily as a hands-free carryall when they’re biking around town. Others put the Talon to work in the field, using it to tote heavy and awkward items; and of course there are plenty who love to hit the trail running with their gear securely and comfortably stored on their backs.
A reviewer from San Diego says: “I have only used this pack for a couple of months on day hikes and have been very happy with it.” Take note, he advises, that “while wearing the pack and trying to place your bottle back into the side pockets, the bottle typically doesn’t seem to fit because of the lower compression strap. The solution for this is to guide the bottle TOWARD your back, rather than to naturally try to shove it in toward the front of the pack.”
A Talon 22 owner from New York state filled every possible crevice of his pack for a day hike and was more than pleased with its performance. “I would estimate the whole pack weighed under 15 lbs., and was completely comfortable. After initial adjustments on the trail, I didn’t need to make any more adjustments unless the terrain changed dramatically.”
This user advises hanging the hydration bladder to the button-snap, not the clip-lock, which is possibly best used for the hose. Osprey’s instruction manual, he says, isn’t exactly clear on this function.
“This is a great pack that I have owned and enjoyed for about 3 years now,” says a reviewer from Kansas City. “I primarily use it mountain biking and on short hikes. The waist belt and shoulder straps keep it riding close to the body, and the compression straps allow you to cinch the load down and keep things tight. … Bottom line is that this is a great lightweight pack with strong design features.”
One last word from a hiker in Massachusetts: “I’d love to describe how the pack feels but here’s the thing: I don’t feel it. It’s that comfy. Granted it’s only a day pack, I don’t put much in it, just one day’s worth of stuff, but still. It’s adjustable, complies with my shape, not the other way around, doesn’t shift, and it’s featherlight.”
It’s good to note that all Osprey’s backpacks are covered by its All Mighty Guarantee: “Osprey will repair for any reason, free of charge, any damage or defect in our product – whether it was purchased in 1974 or yesterday. If we are unable to perform a functional repair on your pack, we will happily replace it.”
