Mount Sopris

Distance: 14.8 miles RT
Elevation Gain: 4,600′
Starting Elevation: Approximately 8,100′
Rating: Difficult

This mountain dominates the view heading south from Carbondale, Colorado and although it is not the tallest mountain around at 12,953 feet it gives the impression of a much higher peak. Be ready to commit a full day to Sopris because of the 14.8 mile trip from the trailhead at Dinkle Lake parking lot and the 4,600 foot of elevation gain. The first part of the hike heads up a gentle 4 miles to Thomas Lakes which is a beautiful destination for those wanting a less rigorous hike and the wildflower viewing along this trail is spectacular in mid July. Beyond Thomas Lakes is where the going gets a bit steeper and you encounter several areas of talus (large rock fields.) Take your time on the trail and enjoy yourself at the top with a pb&j sandwich. I would recommend the Falcon Guide, Hiking Colorado’s Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness for more details on this hike. Thomas Lakes is a great place for your dog to take a dip but I would avoid the rest of the hike with your pooch unless they have tough paws and experience on talus.

Take a well deserved break after this hike and head to Redstone for a cool drink on the patio at the Hightower Trading Post and Cafe or try The Crystal Cafe for some outstanding pizza. After that you may want to just stay and relax in Redstone for a day or two at the Redstone Inn or maybe Amanda’s Hideaway.
