Molas Trail

Elevation Gain: 1,674′
Starting Elevation: 10,604′
Rating: Easy to Moderate

The Molas Trail is a reverse hike. You head down about 1700 feet into the Animas Canyon and then back up. The hike is fairly easy and not too long so it would be a good option for a half-day hike. Even the views from the trailhead are quite spectacular so if you are not inclined to exert too much energy you can just hang out, relax and enjoy the view. This is a great hike if you want to see the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge train close up. Once you arrive at the bottom and cross the bridge over the Animas River the tracks are just about 20 yards away. Take a break and have lunch while you’re waiting for the train. It’s fun to see the looks you get from the train riders wondering how you ended up in the middle of the wilderness. For more details about this hike and specific directions I would recommend the book Hiking Trails of Southwestern Colorado by Paul Pixler and John Peel.

After the hike, head into Silverton and grab a cold one at any one of many restaurants and bars in town. Take a stroll through this small historic mining town and feel yourself being transported back in time. It’s well worth the trip.
