Know Before You Go Hiking

I think everyone should experience hiking in the Rocky Mountains at least once in their life. Getting outdoors in these mountains can really put things in perspective and get your mind off everyday worries. I’ve seen so many places that have literally taken my breath away and I leave feeling humbled and lucky to have taken the trip.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared. Take a look at a few important tips to consider when hiking in Colorado or anywhere for that matter.

High Altitude Awareness

Visiting the mountains of Colorado is an amazing experience but for those of you not accustomed to the higher elevations this information on High Altitude Sickness can make or break a great trip. Some symptoms you may experience are dizziness, headache and shortness of breath.  When planning a hike above tree line, keep in mind to get an early start so that you can be back down before afternoon storms and the lightning they bring.

Backcountry Safety

A hiking trip in the backcountry is a great way to get out and enjoy all the beauty Colorado has to offer from fields of Columbine to towering jagged peaks. Hike with a friend or tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll return. To help ensure the best possible experience look into getting a CORSAR card and give yourself a little peace of mind.

Keep it Pristine

We all want to enjoy the beauty and majesty of the Colorado mountains for years to come and the principles laid out by the Leave No Trace program help us do just that.

Animal Encounters

Black Bears, Mountain Lions, Moose and Elk are all inhabitants of the high country in Colorado. The chances of meeting any of these animals on the trail are pretty slim but you should always be prepared since you are traveling in their territory. The Center for Wildlife Information site has some good info about avoiding encounters and what to do if you have one.
