Tough economic times call for belt-tightening budget strategies. But that shouldn’t mean you have to sacrifice your love of outdoors sports to save dough.

With money concerns comes stress, and when it comes to stress, nothing is better at relieving pressure and keeping you healthy, happy and sane than fresh air and a heart-pumping workout.

The Kelty Coyote 4750 pack is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to getting you and your stuff into the great outdoors.

Stick to your healthy hiking habits — and your trimmed budget — with the Kelty Coyote 4750 Backpack. The Kelty Coyote is as easy on your back as it is your pocketbook, so there is no need to fear that the money you’ll save will be taken out on your hide once you hit the trail with a full load strapped to your back. Day pack or extended-trip backpack, the Coyote 4750 is a true pack animal of exceptional pedigree.

The first Kelty backpack was made in 1952 by Dick Kelty. A pioneer of the industry, Mr. Kelty brought the military-style, external frame backpack to civilian backpacking enthusiasts. At that time, hikers had to put up with rickety, uncomfortable packs made of wood and canvas.

The Kelty revolution turned things around dramatically, combining a light, sturdy aluminum frame with weather-friendly nylon fabric and, most important, a waist belt. With one man and one brand, backpacking went from a literal pain in the neck to a comfortable, adventure-focused sport.

The Kelty Coyote 4750 is yet another shining product of Kelty’s impressive lineage. It’s an internal frame pack of moderate weight (averaging 5 lb. 1 oz. when empty). The capacity is generous and thoughtful – ideal for an extended or weekend excursion.

There are nine pockets in addition to the main compartment. You can get to the pack’s voluminous center through two handy access points: a front panel and the wide top-loading opening. Every nook and cranny is accessible this way.

In addition, the floating top pocket converts to a waist pack. Use it alone for a short trip or take it off if you want to explore past base camp. The main pack features large zippered side pockets, a pair of mesh water bottle pockets and a large front pocket — complete with organizer, for smart storage of essentials. Also included are a daisy chain, ice-axe loop and lash taps for climbing or strapping on extras to the outside of the back pack.

Your own personal hydration reservoir fits into the main compartment (even when the pack’s fully loaded, say users), and tube ports are available on the pack lid. It’s all tied together by side compression straps, which stabilize the load and keep it secure from maximum capacity to end-of-the hike weight.

One feature that’s missing from the Kelty Coyote is a sleeping bag compartment, which is something owners find disappointing but are able to work around.

Comfort-concentrated features of the Kelty Coyote 4750 include quick, “rip-and-stick” adjustment that allows the shoulder strap system to easily slide up and down on the pack’s frame to fit torsos of various lengths. This is especially handy considering the Coyote is a unisex pack.

Padded, contoured shoulder straps join the contoured and also well-padded hipbelt for even weight distribution without hot spots or chafing. Balance the load to your liking with the sternum strap, load-lifter straps and belt stabilizers. Hipbelt tightening gets reinforcement from the Scherer Cinch, a pulley-like feature.

Reviewers on REI.com give the Coyote a rating of 4.6 out of 5 possible stars. Best features include easy adjustability, good padding, simple loading and generous capacity. Other than the lack of a sleeping bag compartment, there are no noted drawbacks to the Kelty.

Positive reviews unanimously praise the Kelty Coyote 4750 for its outstanding value — a big bang for a little buck. Best uses: heavy loads, extended trips, day hikes with light loads and travel.
