Graysill-Grayrock Hiking Trail

Graysill Hiking Trail

View from Graysill Ridge

Distance: 6.6 Miles
Elevation Gain: 2,100′
Starting Elevation: 10,400′
Rating: Moderate

This hike can be a challenge only because there is no clear trail and it is fairly easy to get lost unless you go with someone who has already been there or you are very adept at route finding. Make sure you have a good detailed map and a compass along with the description from Hiking Trails of Southwest Colorado.

My husband and I tried this hike two years ago and finally found the saddle that led up to the peak but by that time we were so worn out that we turned back before reaching the peak. Our friend, Tom, attempted this hike this past weekend and had pretty much the same experience. The best advice he could offer and I would offer as well is to monitor your odometer because mileage is exact to the trailhead as described in the book, Hiking Trails of Southwest Colorado by Paul Pixler and John Peel.

Finding the starting point is critical to getting started on the right path. The hike is a nice bushwack through heavy forest and reaches a meadow where you can look up to see your destination. You will reach the ridge in about 1.5 miles from the starting point. Once you reach the ridge line, the rest is easier as far as navigating goes. You will be treated to some pretty spectacular views along the way.

If you like a challenge and enjoy route finding adventures, check this hike out.
