GoLite Women’s Lite-Speed Backpack

By Karenna Awtry

Already the recipient of acclaim from Outside and Backpacker magazines, the women’s Lite-Speed backpack from GoLite has pushed the envelope further with the 2010 model. It now has better access, a reworked suspension and improved materials (including GoLite’s famous recycled 210 Denier Nylon) that ups the durability of this adventure-hungry hiking backpack.

The biggest of GoLite’s trio of fast-and-light Adrenaline packs, the Lite-Speed backpack is tailored for expedition adventure racing. It’s so versatile and functional, you can depend on the Lite-Speed to work as hard as you do, whether you’re hiking light and fast, running an ultra, trekking out for a snowboarding stint or just doing some

Lite-Speed owners say its performance just couldn’t be better. Comfort and support are provided by the molded hipbelt; moisture-wicking materials on the harness, back and belt; and a curve-matching, customizable design. The sternum and load lifter straps are adjustable, and you can easily tighten the entire load down as you go using GoLite’s ComPACKtor system.

This hiking backpack is phenomenal when it comes to storage. A big pocket out front organizes efficiently. The sculpted lid has zippered access and can be removed to shed some weight. Dual stretchy side pockets hold 1L bottles and trekking poles. There’s an internal hydration sleeve that will accommodate up to a 3L bladder (not included). And when you’re not using the bungee system to cinch down your pack, the compression straps can be unbuckled and converted into a front attachment system for an assortment of larger gear, like sleeping bags or snowshoes.

Reviewers say the shape of the Lite-Speed is a bit unusual and maybe not all that impressive in the looks department, but when it comes to fit, it’s hard to find a match. Available in women’s sizes medium (15.5 in. – 17.5 in. torso) and large (17.5 in. – 19.5 in.), this versatile backpack-to-daypack is an “absolute marvel.”

Users applaud its balance, which will carry a load tight and low for ample freedom of movement on adventure races. The capacity draws raves (“ridiculous,” “highly adjustable”), as does the hydration sleeve, which truly will hold a 3L bladder, whereas some packs can lose internal space when the hydration sleeve is utilized.

Bellowed hip pockets please the crowd when it comes to stashing snacks, cameras or other essentials. The large outside pocket is also great for tucking away your layers when things warm up.

Adventure racers and fast-packers are the Lite-Speed’s biggest fans, but other outdoors enthusiasts have given it a go, too. Day hike regulars who’ve tried out the women’s Lite-Speed are pleased with its capacity, comfort and gender-specific design.

Even a minimalist weekend hike can be done with the GoLite Lite-Speed backpack. Family trips can accommodate plenty of food and essentials, say users, and it’s simple to get at snacks, maps or what-have-you thanks to the exterior stow pockets. Travelers also like the Lite-Speed, saying it’s light, durable and a great companion for 2-3 day trips, whether dashing from cab to cab or hopping flights.

One user seeking a framed daypack for recreational walking and hiking decided the Lite-Speed wasn’t quite the right fit — keep your needs in mind as you’re shopping around.
