GoLite VO24 Unisex Backpack

By Karenna Awtry

Have you ever wondered about the difference between a women’s pack and a unisex hiking backpack? Is it really about function and fit, or just a matter of color choices?

Hiking experts say there are some real differences in the construction of gender-specific packs and those that are built for men and women. A major component is torso length: getting the right length is essential in achieving the most comfortable carry. The second factor is the combination of harness fit and torso length. Both must fit your body, and customizable backpacks can solve a lot of problems brought on by ill-fitting packs.

Another factor, though not universal to all pack manufacturers, is gender-specific design elements. Some women’s packs are built on more narrow frames, with specially curved (and often more narrow) shoulder straps and a range of torso lengths that is generally shorter than the men’s or unisex packs.

GoLite makes three versions of its VO24 hydration-compatible backpack: men’s, women’s and unisex. The unisex version features three torso options: small (15.5 in. – 17.5 in.), medium (17.5 in. – 19.5 in.) and large (19.5 in – 21.5 in). In comparison, the women’s VO24 comes in two lengths: medium (15.5 in. – 17.5 in.) and large (17.5 in. –

The VO24 Unisex hiking backpack has an angle-adjustable hipbelt, which combines with the right torso length to give you a custom fit. The sternum strap (complete with safety whistle) is adjustable, too. Combined, these custom elements assure you’ll find the right fit as you take your VO24 along with you on the most rugged, fast-paced adventures.

This GoLite pack is not your ordinary day pack. It’s tough, water-repellant, 360-degree reflective and ready for long mountain-bike trails, serious day hikes and adrenaline-amping adventure races. Stay energized with hydration storage that includes a bladder sleeve and twin water bottle pockets.

The H20 pockets, by the way, have been improved in the 2010 model, to address depth issues that vexed earlier VO24 owners.

Its capacity is small at 20L, but that’s all you need for these kinds of adventures. The GoLite VO24 is all about performance and function. The moisture-fighting mesh on the back, harness and belt is great. There’s a roomy front stretch panel that lashes down via a reliable bungee cord apparatus. A smaller zippered pocket offers extra organization, too.

Keep your adventure racing team together with the tow loop and blinking light clip, while you stay in sight thanks to the high reflectivity of this backpack. Should your pack soak up some water, bottom drain holes help dry things up quickly.

VO24 users praise this adventure-seeking daypack for its low weight, visibility and excellent capacity. It’s not a multi-day pack (not enough storage capacity, and no way to strap on additional gear or a sleeping bag). Take it on trail runs, mountain climbs, biking or other one-day adventures. The fabric is highly durable and made using the recycled materials that have awarded GoLite a great deal of praise in the outdoors gear community for environmental stewardship.
