Finding Hiking Trails on The Internet

There are loads of sites out there that offer hiking trail descriptions and other details to help you plan your next hiking trip. I’m a fan (for good reason) of getting specialized and local information. That’s one of the big reasons I started this site in the first place.

Yes, you can find all kinds of info on sites like trails.com and gorp.com but if you already know that you plan to visit a particular country, region or state then it might behoove you to get more specialized and local info. I don’t know about you but going to some of those humongous sites can be a little overwhelming and lots of times I don’t find what I’m looking for anyway.

If I want to hike in a different area I find that doing a google search can show me some hiking sites that just might narrow my search. A great example of this type of site is modernhiker.com where you will find detailed hike descriptions and more for the Los Angeles area. Try typing in “hiking near Los Angeles” in Google and see what you come up with.

I used to live in Bend, Oregon so just for fun I found bendwild.com and this site has among other local info some good hiking information for the Bend area. Another benefit about searching out smaller hiking sites that are generally written by locals is that if you have questions, the owners of the sites are generally more accessible and responsive if you want to know more.

I’m not saying those huge sites are not good places to look for hiking trails but if you want to get into the nitty-gritty of a place and find out all you can about the hikes and what else you might be able to do in the area, look for some smaller, specialized sites to give you a little extra.
