Deuter Aircontact 60+10 SL
Deuters’ women’s packs sport gender-focused features such as more narrow backs (the SL stands for slim fit), shorter torsos, increased padding, more-canted hip belts, and shoulder straps that are both more closely set than a unisex pack and also shorter in length. The Deuter Aircontact 60+10 SL women’s pack has all these thoughtful features, and then some.
Deuter Aircontact is the trekking line of packs for this company based out of Augsburg, Germany, Deuter (pronounced doy-ter) has been in the backpack business since 1898 — longer than any other backpack brand in the world. The 60+10 SL is designed for women and focused more on their unique body shape.
Deuter products are represented in more than 45 countries across the globe, including the U.S., where its Longmont, Colorado, branch came to life in 2001.
The move to the USA market proved to be a smart one, as Deuter USA now distributes to more than 600 specialty accounts. A variety of prominent retailers have named Deuter one of the Top Five backpack brands in the whole of the industry.
The Deuter Aircontact line is a “system” more than a model of pack. This system has an ingenious design that pumps air through compression and expansion of the foam which provides cool ventilation no matter how hot you get.
Deuter takes great pride in its products, and as part of that philosophy it strives to craft backpacks that perform a specific purpose for a specific hiker.
If you’re looking for a lightweight, durable and comfortable women’s backpack that offers exceptional quality, the Aircontact 60 is a winner. Utterly unloaded it weighs an average 5 lbs. 13 oz. (or 2.64 kilograms for those who prefer the metric system).
The spacious capacity features 7 cubbies in addition to the main compartment, plus front elastic cord for securing extra small items, and a variety of lash-on points including dual ice axe loops (whereas some light packs somewhat questionably offer but one).
This multi-day pack’s main compartment is generous and simple to fill, thanks to a top-loading design. Side compression straps help you cinch down a bulky load and minimize pack jostle, allowing you to move at a faster pace on the trail.
There also is a pair of side bellows pockets for stashing away your water bottles, snacks and other small sundries. The front of the pack features a zippered map pocket. Stuff your sleeping bag or other light, bulky items into the bottom compartment, which shares a zippered separator with the main bag.
The women’s Aircontact 60 backpack is hydration compatible, so you can slide your own water bladder into the reservoir pocket and sip while you move with the tube exit port.
Deuter’s “Aircontact” name stands for a specific quality of the brand. Special hollow foam in the suspension forces warm air out and draws cool air in, like a pump built in to your backpack. Additional moisture-relieving features include mesh lining on the hip and shoulder straps, a feature many of your have come to expect from your hiking packs.
And here’s a bonus widely desired in a higher-end adventure backpack: the women’s Deuter Aircontact 60 sports its own fully integrated and detachable rain cover. Keep your gear dry without having to shell out additional cash for a rain cover manufactured by another company that may — or may not — get the job done. I’ve seen this complaint on many user reviews (men’s and women’s), and am pleased to find that Deuter answers the needs of its customers in this category.
Women who have owned the Aircontact backpack are happy to find that its more narrow frame fits a variety of heights, from 5’2” to 5’10”. One user spent several weeks backpacking across Costa Rica and had no trouble keeping all her gear securely packed and “bone dry,” thanks to the integrated rain cover.
