Head south from Breckenridge about 2.3 miles to Spruce Creek Rd to access this trail. The parking lot for the trailhead is about 1/4 mile from the actual start. I would recommend picking up a map or book for local hikes at Weber’s Books on 100 S. Main St before heading out. This is a popular hiking area so consider getting an early start to avoid the crowds and afternoon storms. The first section of the hike up to the lower Crystal Lake is fairly steep for most of the first 2 miles and after that it opens up to a gorgeous view of Mt.Crystal the surrounding peaks. On a beautiful sunny Colorado day this is a great spot for a picnic lunch and just relaxing by the lake. The remains of a cabin may stir some thoughts of what life must have been like for a rugged mountain man/woman who lived a simple but harsh life here many years ago. In some ways it appealed to me and I found myself wondering whether or not I could survive and even thrive in a place like this or was I already too spoiled with our modern day conveniences to adapt to this isolated and remote setting. Maybe you will contemplate this same idea while standing inside one of these cabins.
The Breckenridge Brewery is a perfect place to stop after your hike to try one of the local brews and munch on some good eats. Other options include Mi Casa if you’re in the mood for Mexican fare or head back to Frisco and try Peppinos Pizza.
