Crater Lake is a lovely hike for a long half day to full day if you want to relax at your destination and ponder the meaning of life. The hike is fairly easy but a little long and offers views in many directions including the La Plata mountains to the southwest. On arrival at the lake you will be able to see North Twilight peak towering above the lake. Some people like to include a hike to the top of this peak just to add a little more spice to their day. The hike up to the peak is steep but short. So, if you have energy to burn, scarf down your lunch and head up. Ginger would recommend this hike to all of her canine friends that like to swim because Crater Lake is at the end of the trail.
After this hike you could either go to Durango or Silverton to quench your thirst and please your palate. Silverton is a little closer but if you’re staying in Durango I would head in to town and patronize one of the fine drinking or dining establishments such as Ken & Sues, Steamworks, Carvers, Lost Dog (excellent patio). There are really so many fantastic places in Durango.
