Continental Divide Trail
Distance: 15 miles RT
Elevation Gain: 2400′
Starting Elevation: 10,400′
Rating: Difficult
Plan to spend a long day on this one. It takes a bit of time to get here but again, well worth the effort. This is one of the highest trails in Colorado and it makes you feel as if you’re on top of the world.
There are many different ways to access the Continental Divide but this particular hike starts off from outside of Silverton up Cunningham Gulch close to the Highland Mary Lakes Trail. After the initial climb of about 1500 feet the trail levels out somewhat and becomes easier so keep the faith.
Bring your camera and plan to spend time taking tons of pictures because your friends won’t believe the beauty and majesty you try to describe. The trail distance here is 15 miles because we were looking for Eldorado Lake which we didn’t find but you don’t need to hike this entire distance to appreciate this trail.
One word of warning on this hiking trail…there is no cover and you are very exposed so head down before afternoon storms or risk potential lightning strikes.
You will most likely be quite tired after this hike especially if you hike all the way to Eldorado Lake so an overnight stay in Silverton is in order. There are several choices for lodging and restaurants that will please most anyone. I like Handlebars for lunch and you can’t beat the atmosphere.
