Bridge of Heaven

Notes: Pay close attention when driving to the trailhead and continue past the Bachelor/Syracuse mine tour sign. We made the mistake of turning left when you see the mine tour sign.

The name is intriguing and Bridge of Heaven does not disappoint. If you have a 4wd vehicle the distance listed can be shortened by 2.4 miles and elevation reduced by 500′.

The hike begins just outside of Ouray, Colorado off of Dexter Creek Rd at the Horsethief trailhead and winds it’s way through a healthy aspen grove as it gradually starts gaining elevation.

Along the trail you will see glimpses of the chiseled granite peaks surrounding Ouray and this will help to motivate those that may be feeling the effects of switchbacks on tired legs.

Take your time and savor mother natures magnificent work as you climb higher to views that are awe-inspiring. This is one of the most well maintained trails I’ve been on in quite some time and it made the experience that much more enjoyable.

Once you reach the Bridge of Heaven you can see for miles and miles in many directions, from the Red Mountain peaks to The Amphitheater you will relish the fact that you can say “I’ve been on The Bridge of Heaven.”

I did not rate this hike as one of Ginger’s picks because it was a dry hike and she got a little too hot. We brought extra water for her which helped so if you want to bring your dog, start early while it’s cool and bring extra water.

Stop in Ouray after the hike for a well deserved break at one of the towns charming restaurants. There are several relaxing places with nice outdoor patios to get a cool drink and good food.

Some places to consider are the Goldbelt Bar and Grill, O’Briens Pub or the Historic Western Hotel Restaurant & Saloon. If you’re around at dinner time, go to The Bon Ton restaurant for scrumptious food and spectacular views.
